Klub Schach (chess club) is part café, part community center. It is a place for friends to socialize, smoke, and play chess, dominoes, or cards. 2017.

They are serious about chess—and smoking—here. When Adnan and I hung the photos, we had to take breaks from the smoke. We both went home feeling a bit sick. 2017.

I initially thought Klub Schach served only tea, but one day I saw Turkish coffee served from a xhezva. 2017.

From the first day I entered Klub Schach, I was greeted with handshakes and smiles. I think they like me, but I know that they like that I am an American. 2017.

After each visit to Klub Schach, I return with small prints of the photos made there. This led to the idea of large prints for the club’s walls. 2018.

When I return to say hello to the men, I often get a request to make another photo. There is no more room on the walls, but I do return with a small print for the person photographed. 2018.

Klub Schach men remind me of the men at the Farmers Tavern in my hometown of Swea City, Iowa. They laugh, they argue, they smoke, and they drink. At the Farmers Tavern they drank Grain Belt beer and played cards and dice. At Klub Schach it is tea and Turkish coffee. At the Farmers Tavern it was Christians of various stripes. At Klub Schach it is mostly Muslims. 2017.
